When a violent storm washes Viola onto the shores of Illyria, she believes her twin brother is lost at sea. To survive in a strange land, she disguises herself as a man named Cesario and enters the service of Duke Orsino.

The catch? Orsino is head-over-heels for the mourning Countess Olivia. He sends "Cesario" to woo her on his behalf, but the plan backfires spectacularly: Olivia falls for the messenger, while Viola falls for the Duke.

Throw in a hilarious subplot of vengeful servants, a drunken uncle, and a "lost" brother who isn't so lost after all, and you have Shakespeare’s greatest comedy of mistaken identity.
